Graphite Powder

Graphite powder is a dark grey coloured filler than can be added to resins and gelcoats to reduce friction or add anti-static properties. It can also be used as a natural looking dark grey pigment in casting resins.

Available to buy online in 200g, 350g and 2.4kg packs.

Dry Graphite powder is an odourless filler powder than can be used to add a natural looking grey/black colour to cast polymer products or as an additive to reduce friction in cast or laminated composites.

When mixed with casting and laminating resins, graphite powder also adds a smooth, hard wearing, low friction property to castings, components and laminates along with a degree of electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity.

Typical Uses

Graphite powder can be added to most resin systems (including epoxy and polyurethane) up to a maximum percentage of approximately 10% by weight. Doing so will create a very dark, shiny grey colour.

How to Buy

To buy Graphite Powder it is sold by weight and is available in 200g, 350g (1l) and 2.4kg (5l) pack sizes. Please choose the pack size you require from the drop-down menu at the top of the page.

Please contact us if you would like to discuss larger quantities.

Further Information

Particle Mesh/Micron Size

A minimum of 85% of the particles in our Graphite Powder are <325 mesh (equivalent to 44 micron).

Guidelines for Use

It is recommended that the powder is mixed thoroughly with Part 'A' of polyurethane casting resins (like our Fast Cast) before adding part B. Never count the weight of the filler powder in the mix ratio.

Safety

This product is made up of particles that are incredibly small and will become airborne when the material is scooped, moved or mixed. Always wear protective gloves and a dust mask when handling this product in its raw state.

A Better product for this kind of repair is our Black Epoxy Repair Filler which will form a nice a strong repair to surface scratches. It also closely matches the colour of carbon fibre so should help mask the repair.

The Graphite powder is a natural sourced powder.

Graphite powder when mixed into plastics and resins does give a charcoal black colour however it does not tend to lend any sort of 'metallic' effect. It's also worth remembering that graphite powder does slightly modify the properties of materials it is added too, reducing their surface friction (which may or may not be relevant in your application).

Although not specifically designed for mechanical lubrication - such as locks, this is a fine pure graphite powder so would work fine as a dry lubricant in that situation.

Due to the irregular particle shape and fine layer of iron oxide on the particle surface, the level of conductivity ends up being very low. Adding carbon fibre will not significantly improve the conductivity either as carbon fibre is a very high resistance conductor.

To improve the electrical conductivity, you would need a very large proportion of the powder. This is because in typical proportions, when mixed into the resin, the powder is still surrounded by a non-conductive resin and thus there is little direct contact to improve conductivity. With very high quantities, you can get some conductivity, although it is a high resistance conductor. Graphite powder (or milled carbon fibre) is sometimes added to paints and coatings to help with high voltage  electrostatic discharge.

The more you add, the more effective the anti-static properties will be, however addition of the graphite powder will thicken the gelcoat and so you need to determine the right balance for your application. The addition of 10% by weight is likely to be a good starting point but if the anti-static effectiveness is critical then you should conduct your own tests to ensure this ratio gives you the required properties.
