NOW EVEN BETTER! - Black Stuff is now woven in the UK and better quality than ever.
Easy Composites' famous Black Stuff is our budget grade of carbon fibre fabric. At around half the typical price of a cloth of this specification, Black Stuff is the best value carbon fibre fabric you can buy.
The low price of this product is made possible by huge (container load) buying power and less stringent manufacturing tolerances than our standard product lines. However, for less demanding applications Black Stuff still offers a great combination of performance and appearance.

NEW VERSION SINCE MAY 2021
Following some supply and quality issues with our previous supplier, from May 2021 we are delighted to be offering an even better quality of Black Stuff™, produced only for Easy Composites, right here in the UK!
Incredible Low Cost Carbon Fibre for General Use
Easy Composites' Black Stuff carbon fibre is our famous line of 'no-frills' carbon fibre reinforcements. Black Stuff fabrics are 100% genuine carbon fibre reinforcements, with mechanical performance typical of a commercial grade carbon fibre.
The huge savings are made possible because Black Stuff is produced at volume and speed without our usual stringent quality control, visual inspection and aerospace-grade traceability. The end result is that - for non critical applications - Black Stuff is the cheapest and best value carbon fibre you can buy.
Black Stuff carbon fibre is intended for use in non-visual applications, backing layers, mould making and general commercial use. It is not suitable for critical cosmetic applications, aerospace use or other uses where a CoC or fibre certificates are required.
In mechanical properties and general handling Black Stuff is still a great performing all-rounder and is actually comparable to the general purpose carbon fibre sold by many suppliers.
Fibre Specification
Our 200g Black Stuff is always woven from virgin, high strength 3k carbon fibre tow but we are unable to disclose the specific manufacturer and fibre type for commercial reasons. If your application requires full traceability; our standard 210g 2x2 carbon fibre cloth comes with this as standard.
Fault Tolerance
One of the main reasons Black Stuff can be sold at around half the price of comparable products is because it is produced at higher speed and without visual inspection. As such, minor faults such as pulls/loops, broken fibres or some fabric distortion are normal and should be expected. Black Stuff is not sold as a cosmetic or visual-grade material.
If you do need the highest quality
Remember that if you do need the highest standard of carbon fibre reinforcement, all other fabrics sold on our website are woven to the most exacting standards with full quality inspection, fibre certification and batch traceability. Follow this link for our high quality Carbon Fibre 2/2 Twill 3k 210g.
How to Buy
Black stuff is available to by buy the linear metre (rolled to order at any length up to 100m) or in 10m or 100m rolls, which attract a further discount. Choose from linear metres or a 10m or 100m roll from the drop-down list at the top of the page.
When purchasing by the linear metre, especially in longer lengths, we will sometimes join the fabric (maximum of one join) to avoid waste. This is not done for other carbon fabrics but applies to Black Stuff because of the very low price.
OEM/Large Customers
If you're a manufacturer with a large or regular requirement for a basic grade carbon fibre like this, call us on +44 (0)1782 454499 or contact sales@easycomposites.co.uk to discuss your requirements.

For wet-lay lamination you will use approximately the same weight of resin as the weight of the fabric. For example, with a 200gsm cloth, for 1 square metre you will have 200g of fabric and thus will need 200g of resin to wet it out, plus a small amount of wastage for the brush and mixing pot.
Thickness of any reinforcement is dependent on consoldation (how much it's 'squashed down'. For this reason we generally give out thickness figures for when the reiforcement is consoldated under vacuum (1bar); this seems like the most useful figure. For example, a 90gsm carbon, a single layer, compressed under vacuum, would be about 0.1mm thick. For a 200gsm carbon a single layer would be about 0.25mm thick. This is the number you see listed under 'thickness' in the specification table.
You can purchase a sample of our fabrics here.
Well, this depends entirely on what reinforcement you're laminating, speficically how thick and heavy it is. If you're laminating 5mm of carbon fibre you'll use a lot more resin that if you're laminating just 1mm of it. Fortunately though there a really quick rule to get a good estimate - simply add up the total weight of your reinforcement and you'll probably need the same weight in resin. This means that if you're laminating 5 layers of 200g carbon (so a total of 1000g of carbon) then you'll want about 1000g (i.e. 1kg) of Epoxy Resin. If it was 2 layers of 450g glass then you'd need about 900g per square metre.
The carbon fabric itself will survive many hundreds of degrees and is not the limiting factor for almost all applications. The limiting factor will be the heat distortion temperature of the resin system you plan to laminate this fabric with.
An engine rocker/cam cover may easily be exposed to hot oils at around 120°C as well as heat from the exhaust which would be dependent on the engine configuration and level of tune. As such we would recommend considering using a higher temperature resin system such as our Very High Temperature Epoxy Laminating Resin which, with an appropriate post-cure, can be used up to 180°C.
An alternative option would be to consider making the part with an out of autoclave pre-preg carbon fibre where typically the resin systems can achieve a HDT up to 120°C.
For very critical applications, such as aerospace, even dry carbon fabrics will be 'lifed' due to very gradual degradation of the sizing on the fibres, however in practice, for most applications, the degradation is minimal and most users would consider dry fabrics to not have a shelf life when stored appropriately.
All Carbon fibres are naturally charcoal black in colour.
Blackstuff, in common with many twill fabrics has good drapeability over compound curves and surfaces which means it can be easier to conform to such shapes than some other weave styles.
Everything that you need to know is in the description of this product. However, something that is not mentioned is the fact that the tows are not packed at tightly as their popular 2x2 twill, making the cloth stiffer, draping trickier, and distortions unavoidable (hence is not for cosmetic applications). Overall, it delivers what is promising.
Very tight weaving it can be handled without making holes; I use it in Windsurf board construction; perfectly suited at a crazy price!!
