CULR Universal Pigments are highly concentrated liquid pigments and can be used to add anywhere between a solid metallic appearance through to a subtle, translucent 'glittery' appearance to epoxy resin.
This set of 3 metallic effect pigments includes polished gold, polished silver and polished copper and is available in sets of 3x 20ml bottles and a large 3x 200ml 'trade' size. Choose the required kit size from the drop-down list at the top of the page.
How do these differ from SHIMR powders?
Although the GlassCast range of pigments also includes the metallic effect 'SHIMR' powder pigments, these metallic effect liquid pigments are also included because they behave differently in the resin and can be used either to create a different effect or to compliment the appearance of the metallic SHIMR powder pigments.
The main difference between the SHIMR powders and these metallic effect CULR pigments is where the effect sits within the resin. Whilst the SHIMR powders will tend to disperse through the resin and settle slightly lower down in the mix, the CULR metallic pigments will tend to sit nearer to the top surface, creating a brighter more intense metallic effect at the surface; great for resin art and especially geodes.
Super Concentrated
CULR pigments are one of the most concentrated resin pigments you can buy and the advanced liquid formula ensures that these intense pigments disperse in seconds.
For solid colours, up to 5kg (5 litres) of epoxy resin can be coloured using a single 20ml bottle of CULR pigment.
For a translucent colour tint, much less pigment is required. A single 20ml bottle is enough to produce a see-through colour tint in more than 50kgs of resin!
Pigmenting for Primer Coats
When using CULR pigments to create a highly opaque ‘primer coat’ in projects such as resin countertops, a very high pigment ratio of 10% should be used. Such a high ratio will ensure the very strong, opaque colour necessary to block-out existing countertops or textures of wood substrates below.
The ratio of 10% pigment to resin is especially important if using light colours like Super White or metallic CULR pigments.
We have not tested blending the CULR pigments with other pigment brands and types and although in many cases it may work, we would recommend testing specifically to ensure there is not a compatibility issue with another brand of pigment.
How to Use
CULR™ pigments are super-easy to use; just drip the desired amount of any colour into either mixed resin and hardener or into just the resin side only (if you want to pigment the resin in advance of using it).
Depending on the strength of the colour required and the actual colour you’re using, you’ll need between 0.1% and 1% of pigment. The tables below provide an easy reference as to how much pigment to add or simply keep adding drops until you get the desired colour strength. Remember that CULR pigments are super-concentrated and so you only need a tiny amount to achieve stunning, vivid colours.

Unfortunately this isn’t something we have tested but I suspect it would not be suitable. Being water based, it is highly likely to have an adverse effect on the base material of the Varnish – it cannot for example be used into Polyurethanes as it causes them to froth and inhibits/damages the cure.
