This is one of the first washbasins that we produced in carbon fibre. Before we began designing the sink, we conducted multiple months of testing and experimentation with the material, following various guides, as it was a completely new material for us.
The sink was designed and pattern was 3D printed. From this pattern we made a mould using the Easy Composites Uni-Mould kit. During the making of the mould and the first carbon fibre sink there were various technical difficulties that were solved after contacting Easy Composites for technical support. Thus we were able to create our first sink.
Once we had gained experience in the process, we decided to focus more on the aesthetics of the project by creating a basin in forged carbon fibre with blue fragments. Making this piece was more difficult than the others since we could not use any kind of adhesive to hold the fibres in place - from previous experiments we noticed that using a clear gelcoat on the surface, in this case your GC50, even a small amount of spray adhesive created an unpleasant foggy effect on the surface of the sink.
To solve this problem, we created an invisible adhesive, just like Easy Composites showed in the high-temperature infused mould video. Once we created the forged pattern we laid a reinforcement on the back of 450g carbon cloth to give strength to the sink and we completed the creation by resin infusion, always without using adhesive spray. After curing and demoulding, the sink was thoroughly polished in multiple steps, cut and protected with a nano-technology surface treatment to achieve a perfect shiny and durable surface.
