Unidirectional (UD) reinforcement is a type of composite reinforcement with all the carbon fibres aligned in the same direction. Unidirectional reinforcement makes it possible to create incredibly strong, lightweight components by precisely orienting the carbon fibre to provide maximum strength in the direction where it is needed most. In order to maintain their form and integrity, unidirectional reinforcements do all include some type of support in the form of a binder, internal net or cross stitching. Because all the reinforcement and strength runs longitudinally down the length of the reinforcement, unidirectional reinforcements are often supplied and used in narrower formats which are simply positioned adjacent to each other to achieve wider widths, with no detriment to strength.
All unidirectional reinforcements in this category are dry reinforcements suitable for use with a wide range of resin systems and laminating processes including hand laminating, vacuum bagging and resin infusion. Our wide format undirectional carbon fibre reinforcement can be used just like a woven cloth and is particularly suited to adding unidirectional reinforcement to larger structures whilst our narrower UD carbon tapes can be used to provide more localised unidirectional reinforcement on larger structures or to conveniently reinforce narrow components like skis or archery limbs.
