The Carbon Mods Carbon Fibre Rapid Repair Kit is a unique carbon fibre repair kit developed specifically for the rigours of track-side, water-side or even airfield based repairs to carbon fibre or composite vehicles and equipment.

The kit includes a special epoxy resin system developed in conjunction with a major F1 to meet their demands for a high performance epoxy resin exhibiting excellent flexural strength and capable of curing relatively quickly (around 6hr), making track-side repairs possible during long testing days.

The Carbon Fibre Rapid Repair Kit combines this advanced resin system with carbon fabric and all the necessary ancillaries to make an instant repair to a damaged carbon fibre or composite vehicle, boat, plane or piece of equipment. Everything about the kit is carefully thought-out to make 'on location' repairs as easy as possible with the quality of the materials ensuring the repair will probably be stronger than the undamaged part.

The kit can be used to make a single repair up to 30cm x 20cm or multiple smaller repairs.

Full instructions are included with the kit to enable you to easily and quickly make a very strong repair.

Repair Process

The process for the rapid repair kit is as follows;

  • Remove any loose material from the damaged area (whatever can be readily removed without tools)
  • Sand the damaged area with a course sand paper
  • Degrease the area
  • Cut the carbon cloth to size (approx 2" past the visable damage)
  • Mix the resin and apply the layers of cloth, this is a similar process to fibreglass work (or paper-mache!)
  • Apply the peel-ply cloth (optional step to tidy up the patch)
  • Leave to cure and remove the peel-ply

Yes, the kit has full instructions printed on the label so that you always have them to hand when you use the kit.

The Rapid Repair Resin used in this starter kit has modest UV resistance but like many epoxy resins it would potentially be discoloured slightly by long-term exposure to UV light. If the repair that you're doing is more structural in nature, father than cosmetic, then it would be normal to not choose to undertake any further UV protection of the resin and to accept that some minor discolouration would be a possibility in the long term. If you're using the kit to make a cosmetic repair then it would be necessary to protect the resin by painting over it using either a clear or pigmented UV resistant paint.
The Peel-Ply is used when the finished repair needs to have a fine textured surface finish (ideal for bonding to) it is used as the last layer on the repair and is torn off after the resin has cured. For repairs where you want a glossy finish, like an external kayak repair, it is not needed and the release film should be used instead.
Unlike polyester or vinylester resins, with epoxy resins, the mix ratio should *never* be changed. No matter what size repair you are doing you should only ever mix at the stated mix ratio. If you try to change the mix ratio you will find that the resin does not cure properly. Therefore, just mix according to the stated mix ratio and if you need more time (for a large repair) then you would need to potentially mix up multiple smaller batches.

...as I have a clip / crack in my rear stay following a rear derailleur hanger failure?

Potentially, yes. We don't market a bike frame repair kit specifically because the safety implications of repairing a bike frame are obviously quite different from repairing a damaged fishing pole, although the process itself can be very similar. Providing the damage is not too extensive, such as in your case, and you understand and follow the process properly then there is no reason why you can't use this kit to repair a small area of damage on a carbon bike frame. It is of course up to you to ensure the repair is adequate and suitable.

It all depends on the in-use temperature on the exhaust end can. Although the kit has the materials and resins to perform the repair fine, the resin has a upper temperature limit of 80ºC. Above which, the resin would soften and break down ruining the part. We would recommend measuring the actual temperature with an infra-red thermometer or similar to be sure how hot it actually gets. If it is over 80ºC but no higher than 180°C then you can use our Very High Temperature Epoxy Laminating Resin (with a suitable post-cure) to achieve the 180°C capability.
