Pascal has created a custom carbon bonnet and several engine bay parts for his Honda Insight to save weight as much as possible. Following the process in our Carbon Fibre Bonnet Video,Carbon Fibre Bonnet Video, he took a mould from the original bonnet using the Uni-Mould system. The mould included the upper skin and some parts of the frame underneath where the extra reinforcement was needed.
The moulds were then used with a resin infusion process to keep a good finish and a lightweight part. 3D core was used as a structural core on the bonnet skin to add stiffness but keep the weight low compared to a solid laminate. The inner skin and underside of the bonnet was sanded and finished to a high gloss finish to show off the carbon underside. The top of the bonnet was painted to blend in with the rest of the car. The same basic method was used to create a battery holder and other various trim panels under the bonnet and in the boot.
The result has been some high quality and light weight parts enabling Pascal’s car to benefit greatly from the weight reduction.
