Although not necessarily an exhaustive list, the following tools and materials, supplied by Easy Composites, were used in this project.
The quantity shown below is the approximate amount used in the project rounded up to the nearest available kit size or quantity.
This project was to reduce the weight of the race car that Sam races in the UK Time Attack Series.
To achieve this Sam produced moulds of the original doors, inside and out using gel coat, fibreglass matting of various weights and resin.
After the moulds were made, the next step was the lay-up using layers of 210gsm carbon 2x2 twill, 2mm lantor soric and finally 210gsm Carbon Kevlar 2x2 twill, the whole setup was then infused with IN2 resin.
The finished product came in at 3.4kg, with the stock doors weighing in a little over 21kg!
Sam said he is over the moon with the final result and has learnt lots throughout the process.
Sam is an aerospace engineer and works on the Airbus A350 carbon composite aircraft, specifically the wings.
Although this has given him a good grounding and knowledge in the field, this project has taught lots which he will take forward going into future projects.
